Summer Residential Governor's Schools
Two of seven Virginia
summer residential governor's schools are hosted by the University
of Richmond School of Continuing Studies. These programs are sponsored
by the Virginia Department of Education and participating schools. Two
hundred gifted high school students (rising juniors and seniors) in
the humanities join two hundred gifted high school students in the arts
for this four-week, theme-based residential enrichment program. The
summer session typically runs through the month of July. Applications
are available from the Virginia
Department of Education each October for all summer residential
Governor's School programs.

Humanities Program
The humanities program at the University of Richmond, in residence and
curricular collaboration with the Governor’s School for Visual
& Performing Arts, is designed to be a broad based, interdisciplinary
mosaic of specific courses related to the theme "Journey Beyond."
One of the expectations of modern society requires individuals to realize
their creative potential for improving the future. The Governor's School
program is designed for the students' exploration of integrated disciplines
in the arts, history, literature, philosophy, anthropology, political
science, economics, sociology, psychology, and media.
Through reading, discussion, seminars, and lectures, students will
attain a better understanding of themselves, their future roles, and
the effect of their voices on society and the world. The primary purpose
of the Summer Residential Governor’s School for Humanities is
to provide an enriching, intellectual experience that will stimulate
gifted students to use their imaginations, enabling them to think more
creatively and productively about ways in which their individual pasts
influence future culture and community development. Writing activities,
group projects, guest speakers and field trips facilitate the integration
of many disciplines to a greater extent than traditional educational
programs. Humanities applicants should have a solid background in American
history and literature. Those students who are selected for the program
will have opportunities to select a specific area of study related to
the overall theme.
Visual & Performing Arts Program
The Visual & Performing Arts program at the University of Richmond,
in residence and curricular collaboration with the Governor’s
School for Humanities, includes classes, workshops, individual/small
group activities, lectures, and independent study in a variety of subjects
from the visual and performing arts. Interdisciplinary classes which
focus on the integration of the arts and the humanities are also a part
of the daily schedule.
Students in the Governor's School for Visual & Performing Arts
may apply for one area of study (Dance, Vocal Music, Instrumental Music,
Theater, or Visual Art). In each area, students will study in interdisciplinary
teams the techniques, materials, media, language, and conventions of
that form, related to the theme "Journey Beyond." The
Governor's School for the Visual & Performing Arts is not a conservatory.
Rather, all students participate in interdisciplinary courses designed
to stimulate thinking on a number of topics related to the arts and
to the humanities as they impact the arts. The focus of study will be
the symbiotic relationship between art and society.
Students are expected to do outside reading and preparation for their
courses. Their study will be facilitated through small group and ensemble
work. Works in progress by faculty, guest artists, and other students
are shared in order to enrich individual perceptions related to the
arts.
Those students who are selected for the program will have opportunities
to select a specific area of study related to the overall theme.
